Online Training on Sustainable Infrastructure Finance


1. Context

This online training builds on previous capacity building activities organised by G-NEXID:

  • Sustainable finance (2021)
  • Sustainable trade finance (2022)
  • Trade finance (2023)

The outcomes and objectives of this training are aligned with the 2-year G-NEXID strategy adopted in 2023:

  • Action: Promote Green and Sustainable Finance,
  • Baseline/modalities: Encourage Members to demonstrate environmental consciousness in project finance.
  • Target: Encourage Members to scale up green finance by 10% at the end of the period.

The speakers

Mr. Rowan Palmer is a Programme Management Officer at the UN Environment Programme’s Resources and Markets Branch in Geneva, where he has worked since 2014. Rowan leads the branch’s Sustainable Infrastructure Team, which aims to promote and build capacity for needs-based, systems-level, integrated approaches to sustainable infrastructure development. Prior to joining UNEP Rowan worked for five years as an environmental manager for large-scale transportation infrastructure projects in his home province of British Columbia, Canada.  Rowan holds a bachelor’s degree in international development and Environment Studies from McGill University in Montreal and a Master’s degree in International Relations from Instituto de Empresa in Madrid.
Dr. Mamiko Yokoi-Arai is the Deputy Head of the Investment Division and the Head of the Infrastructure Unit in the Directorate of Financial and Enterprise Affair of the OECD. She previously worked at the Bank of Japan and the Japanese Financial Services Agency. She was a Reader in International Finance Law at Queen Mary, University of London for several years, teaching financial regulation and emerging market issues at the LLM programme. She has a PhD in Law from the University of London, and a MA and BA from the University of Tsukuba.
Mr. Pedro NICOLAU holds a master’s degree in Public Affairs from Sciences Po (France) and a bachelor’s degree in International Affairs from the State University of Sao Paulo (Brazil). Pedro has over 12 years of experience in infrastructure, energy and real estate in Latin America and Asia and a strong background in project management, business development, public affairs, stakeholder management, market research and leadership. Pedro has also worked closely with multilateral development banks, institutional investors, and fund managers in the following regions: the Americas, Europe, and Asia-Pacific. Pedro is Head of Integrations at SIF and led integrations in countries such as South Africa, Angola, and Indonesia.

The speakers

Ms. Derin FAJUYITAN
Ms. Derin Fajuyitan is a banker with over 22 years of global banking experience in Project & Asset Based Finance, commercial banking & consulting services.
 
Derin holds an MSc in International Securities, Investment & Banking from the ISMA Centre (now ICMA Centre), at the University of Reading, U.K and a bachelor’s degree in Banking & Finance.
 
Since joining Afreximbank in 2012, she has participated in and led the structuring and financing of project finance transactions which include public and private sector financing across the manufacturing, energy, extractives and trade infrastructure sectors.
 
Derin is very passionate about Africa and takes pride in the opportunity her role provides to serve the continent in several capacities and in ways that improve the social and economic welfare of the 53 African member countries of Afreximbank. Derin is a women and children’s advocate, supporting initiatives to empower women in setting up businesses and the education of the girl child in Africa.
Dr. Olagunju ASHIMOLOWO
International banking and finance executive and Chartered Accountant with more than 30 years of experience in Financial Management, Internal Control, Audit and Compliance, Risk Management and Tax Management, Dr. Ashimolowo holds an MBA in Finance from the University of Lagos, a second Master’s degree in Applied Business Research (MABR) and a DBA in Business Administration, with research interest in Technology Adoption from SBS Swiss Business School, Zurich, Switzerland.
Ms. Lucy CHEGE
Ms Chege is currently Associate Executive: Project & Infrastructure Finance at the Eastern and Southern African Trade and Development Bank (TDB). She has 20 years of extensive experience in project and infrastructure finance. Lucy was previously Head – Energy, Environment and Information Communications Technologies (ICT) at the Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA). She was also a Divisional Executive at DBS and an Advisory Committee member of various private equity funds. Lucy has originated, structured and executed the financing of landmark transactions including Public Private Partnerships (PPPs) in energy, telecommunications, transport, water and health sectors. She played a key role in setting up South Africa’s Renewable Energy Independent Power Producers Programme (REIPPP) and financing the projects in the programme. Lucy developed the operational strategy and led several teams in financing over 30 renewable energy projects. The teams won 10 local and international awards for the transactions. Lucy has an MBA in Finance from Manchester Business School. She has also completed the Advanced Management Programme at Harvard Business School.      
Mr. Alto CHAPOLA
Mr. Alto Chapota is a seasoned banking and finance professional with over 25 years of experience in corporate finance, development banking, and business advisory. He holds an MBA in Corporate Finance from the University of Stirling, Scotland, an LLM in International Business Law from University of Salford UK and a Bachelor of Commerce in Accountancy from the University of Malawi. He has also completed specialized courses in Environmental and Social Risk Assessment, Credit Management, Project and Infrastructure Finance, Structured Trade Finance, Project Rehabilitation and Debt Recovery.
